WATCH: Over in the MLS, Philadelphia Union star and former US National Team player Alejandro Bedoya has sent a message to his nation’s Congress, pleading for action against gun violence in the wake of two mass shootings over the weekend.

After opening the scoring for Philadelphia against DC United, the 32-year-old celebrated with teammates before locating an on-field microphone which he used to deliver his passionate message, “Hey Congress, do something now! End gun violence.”

DC United’s Audi Field, which played host to this match, is located in the nation’s capital of Washington D.C and is a mere 6 kilometres away from the White House.

The Union would go on to beat DC United 5-1, but the emphatic victory was well and truly overshadowed by Bedoya’s message, with the 66-capped national team player earning plaudits for his brave stand against passive political responses to these latest massacres.

The El Paso Wallmart shooting was the eighth-worst in US history, with 20 lives lost and a further 26 people left seriously injured.

Just hours later in Ohio, a further 9 people were killed in a popular nightlife district in Dayton.

This year alone, the US has witnessed more than 250 mass shootings, resulting in the loss of more than 1000 lives…  At this rate, there have been more shootings than days in 2019.
